Lent #13

James 2:21-26 God's Friend

Nearly every truly good thing costs us something. You've probably heard (or said) the phrase, "no good deed goes unpunished." Even when good things happen to us, there's always some caveat, a requirement, a follow up, a cost of some kind, of time, of energy, of heart.

And it's best when it costs us greatly.

If we were only to receive blessings in this life without any cost whatsoever, then we would reach a place where these blessings would be expected, even deserved, and are no longer even seen as blessings, but a normal part of life.

Friendships are like this.

We are not simply on the receiving end of every relationship, in fact I would guess that none of our relationships require nothing of us. Or another way to say it is that
every relationship requires something of us.

Friendship costs us something. Friendship with God costs us something as well. Yes, God has called us his own, given us grace freely and abundantly, even called us friends, but when we say "yes" we are agreeing to something more than just God's blessings, we are expected to invest in God as well.

God has called you friend. What will it require of you to be a friend of God in return?
